So spring is now upon us and how glorious it truly is! What a breath of fresh air to have clear skies, temps in the low 70’s and flowers starting to bloom. Needless to say, we’ll take all we can get! So with the nice weather and spring in mind, here are some springtime-themed (loosely) illusions to get more outdoor imagery into our sun-starved heads!

Illusion #1: Paris in the Springtime

Read the below sign, and then come back and read the rest of this paragraph… O.K. You’ve read the sign. What does it say? Are you absolutely sure? Hmmm…you may have spotted your error already. It’s interesting, because as you study the sign closer, vs. just reading it, you’ll spot the error quickly. But just reading, not so much (at least in most cases). Our brains make associations with phrases we have heard before, such as this one, and they automatically block out or negate what we don’t recognize as fitting. So, of course, this sign actually reads, “I love Paris in the the springtime.” The two “the” words are the clear error. Further, the sharp red color of the triangle serves to distract us away from analyzing the words too much… all part of a great illusion!

Illusion #2: Green is Not Always Green

How many shades of green can you see in this effective illusion? Check it out below and then read the rest of the paragraph below.

The two shades of green are actually just one. Sure you’ve seen this kind of thing before, but with Spring on the way, and green things growing, well…here it is today! So, this illusion works because of the placement of the two green areas in the illusion. This is called a “perspective illusion.” This kind of illusion plays on the eyes, causing the darker shade of green to appear closer to the eye, and the paler shade farther away. However, all of the green shades are identical. It’s just the colors next to them that make them appear different. Pretty wild.

Illusion #3: Spilling Flowers

So this particular image is not an illusion per say, other than it looks like the pot is spilling out flowers (which of course grew out of the pot). That said, I figured it was a good item to add to today’s post as it is planting time around here…and this is just a really fun idea! So…buy yourself a planter, tip it on its side, plant, and watch the fun! If your garden seeks a bit of whimsy, this just might be your plan.
